"If you want a child’s mind to grow

You must first plant a seed."

-Anonymous.

Meet my little gardeners Ryle and Reanne. Since quarantine has begun for our family, I've been thinking hard of activities and hobbies that we could do while staying at home. For a mom of two kids with big age difference it was hard to do that. Then on the news I heard how people started growing their own garden in their backyard. So, I realize that would be a good idea for my kids. Plus, it's very easy and our family would get a lot of benefits from planting our own veggies and fruits.

As a beginner in gardening, my husband Remart & Ryle chose to buy Peas, Sunflowers and Zucchini seeds. For me, I bought tomatoes, strawberry, herbs, flowers & squash that are already grown at the store because the warm weather here in Canada is really not that long and there won't be enough time for some of the plants to grow if we start from scratch, specially those that are seasonal. So, what I did was , I just repotted them to a bigger container and tried to spread them to give them space to grow more.

I also re-grow some of the scrap from the veggies we used like, lettuce, potato, onion, pumpkin & bokchoy. I felt like it was the easiest way for beginners to start. But, I will share that with you and also post photos of it in another blog post.

As for my kids, gardening was a great activity for them. I know that they enjoyed it because they were very attentive with what I was showing them, specially Ryle who is 5 years old. I loved how he was quietly observing what I was doing. I think gardening is a great way to teach him a lot of things like 1.how to be gentle with handling things like a seed, 2. how to be patient in waiting for it to grow, 3. how to care by watering the plants, 4. how the life cycle of a plant works and lastly 5. how and where fruits and vegetables comes from. For my daughter Reanne, who started gardening at 10 months old can also learn by exploring and touching the soil. She mimics things by observing what I do like shovelling and digging the soil in a pot. Everything about gardening is fun. Now, we just need to wait until harvest time. How about you, does your family have a little garden too?.
